Saskatchewan police website hacked by apparent supporters of Islamic militants

Staff discovered Wednesday morning that the website — papolice.ca — had been changed and the front page replaced.

It displayed a message that read “Hacked by Team System Dz. I Love Islamic state” with a voice in the background that spoke in a foreign language.

Information technology experts were called in to correct the problem and police said in a statement that the hack had a minimal impact on their operations, with the exception of the website being temporarily unavailable.

The site has never been hacked before and the department said steps are being taken to prevent a similar incident from happening again.

The statement also said the group responsible for the hack has been in the media before because of activity on other sites, but officials did not elaborate.

“This incident serves as a reminder to the public that agencies and individuals can be vulnerable,” deputy chief Jeff Rowden said in the statement.

He pointed to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or internet service providers as sources of help if questionable emails or content show up on computers or other devices.

Prince Albert police Chief Troy Cooper said earlier that the hack was “merely website contamination.”
