Quebec police watchdog investigating after man in Kuujjuaraapik injured with knife

Aug. 18, 2022, Kuujjuaraapik, Que. – Quebec’s Bureau of Independent Investigations has launched an investigation into a Nunavik police intervention that happened in Kuujjuaraapik Wednesday night.
The bureau, which is tasked with investigating deaths and serious injuries involving police in Quebec, announced the investigation Thursday in a news release, published in French.
According to the release, Nunavik police were called at approximately 10 p.m. to respond to an altercation involving a 39-year-old man who was armed with a knife.
Upon their arrival, police attempted to control the man with a taser, the release said. When that happened, the man sustained a serious injury from the knife and was taken to a health centre in critical condition. The release did not say whether it was an officer or the 39-year-old who inflicted the knife injury.
Four investigators were tasked with investigating the circumstances of the event, according to the bureau.
Montreal police have launched a “parallel investigation,” the release said, and are acting as a “support police service” in accordance with bureau bylaws.
Nunatsiaq News emailed Nunavik Police Service for more information on the incident.
“As for additional information, unfortunately, since the investigation is under the responsibility of the Bureau of Independent Investigations, we cannot give any additional information than what they publish on their side,” wrote Jean-Francois Morin, Nunavik police’s deputy chief of operations.
Once the investigation is finished, the Bureau of Independent Investigations is tasked with presenting its findings to the province’s director of criminal prosecutions, who will then decide if the incident warrants charges.
