Never stop on a hill
Reading retired OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis's new book on leadership brought back a lot of memories about the good, bad and indifferent leaders I served under during my career.
Lewis takes the reader on a thorough and wide ranging examination of leadership from its various facets. He examines and discusses what he considers critical characteristics of good leaders; trust, ethics, integrity, setting the example, communication, connecting with and developing relationships, decision making, support and caring, the difference between managers and leaders, and being accountable. He also touches briefly on promotional processes, working with police labour unions, dealing with the media, and not forgetting about police retirees.
This book will make you laugh, cry, nod and shake your head, as Lewis takes you step by step through many of his own leadership experiences and observations, both good and bad. With the occasional blunt language that takes you right to the point, it's a good read for anyone in a leadership position or aspiring to get there.
Written in consultation with 23 active or retired police chiefs, Never Stop on a Hill, is a thorough collection of wise insights and experiences on the successes and failures of leadership in policing.
Never Stop on a Hill would make for a good mandatory read for all aspiring leaders, new promotions and seasoned personnel of all ranks.
