New joint RCMP and municipal enforcement detachment strengthening community safety

June 13, 2023, Cochrane, Alta. – In a collaborative effort to enhance community safety and optimize law enforcement services, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Cochrane Municipal Enforcement have announced the opening of the new Protective Services Building on Monday, June 19th. This partnership aims to create a more efficient and effective approach to policing, ensuring the highest level of safety and security for residents and visitors alike.
The new Protective Services Building, located in the community of Heartland, was identified as a need through the obligations under the Municipal Police Service Agreement, which requires a municipality to provide police member accommodations. The previous RCMP detachment located in east Cochrane was well beyond its functional life. The Protective Services Advisory Committee was key in determining the location/area for the facility. From there, Cochrane Administration began to research policing needs and the size of parcel required. Work began in 2021, with a construction budget of $23M. The project was completed on time and on budget.
“The newly established joint RCMP and Municipal Enforcement detachment brings together the expertise and resources of both agencies under one roof,” said Stacey Loe, Executive Director, Protective and Community Services, Town of Cochrane. “By sharing information, intelligence and operational strategies, this collaborative initiative will maximize the impact of law enforcement efforts in Cochrane.”
Residents and stakeholders can expect enhanced collaboration on community-based initiatives. The joint detachment will prioritize proactive engagement with the community, fostering strong relationships with residents, businesses, and community organizations. By working closely with local stakeholders, the RCMP and Municipal Enforcement will gain valuable insights into community needs and concerns, enabling them to tailor their services accordingly.
“It’s not often that a municipality has the opportunity to construct new facilities,” said Mayor Genung, Town of Cochrane. “With the recent opening of The Station and the forthcoming opening of this new Protective Services Building, we are truly building for the future of Cochrane. Not only does the Protective Services Building provide an integrated space for the RCMP, Municipal Enforcement and Victim Services, it also provides space for future growth. The new Protective Services Building will officially open to the public on Monday, June 19th for both RCMP and Municipal Enforcement.
