May 25, 2022, Whitby, Ont. – The Durham Regional Police Services Board has announced that it is taking steps to ensure stability, continuity and effectiveness within the Command Team of the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS). The search will soon begin for a new chief of police, with a request for proposals (RFP) being issued this week to solicit bids to support the board in this process.
The board has also extended the employment agreement with Deputy Chief Dean Bertrim until January 2026, recognizing the importance of his contribution to the leadership team.
Since his appointment as Interim Chief of Police in September 2020, Chief Rollauer has served as a model leader, steering the DRPS through a challenging period while demonstrating decency, integrity and effective decision-making. The DRPS has made important progress towards its objectives under his leadership, and he has helped position the DRPS for continued success. Chief Rollauer’s intention is to retire in early 2024, and he will resume his position as Deputy Chief of Police upon the appointment of a new Chief of Police.
Deputy Chief Joe Maiorano, who was appointed on an interim basis in October 2020, will remain in his position until the selection of a new chief of police. The board has expressed its appreciation to all members of command for their outstanding leadership.
The search for a new chief of police will be informed by the extensive consultations that were conducted on behalf of the board by Environics Research and reported to the board in April 2022. The board values and appreciates the input received from community members, stakeholders, and members of the DRPS, and will use the information and analysis provided to inform its decisions for choosing the next chief of police. The board has retained the services of the former Chief of the York Regional Police, Mr. Eric Jolliffe, and the former Chief of the Winnipeg Police and Inspector General of Policing for Ontario, Mr. Devon Clunis, to provide expert advice throughout the process.
