Indigenous leaders call for release of report investigating Saskatchewan police force

July 19, 2023  By The Canadian Press

July 19, 2023, Saskatoon, Sask. – Indigenous leaders in Saskatchewan are calling for the release of a report into Prince Albert police and transparency for the family of a man who died while in custody.

Saul Laliberte, who was 33, died in the police detention facility in 2021.

Earlier this month, a 21-year member of Prince Albert police was charged with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

Laliberte’s death was the third to take place in police custody over a few weeks in Saskatchewan’s third-largest city, prompting the province to commission an independent review of the force.

The province released recommendations from the report Tuesday, but Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Vice Chief Edward Dutch Lerat says the full report must be released.

Indigenous leaders called for the immediate implementation of the recommendations, as well as including a representative of the Prince Albert Grand Council on the board of police commissioners.
