Independent watchdog agency charges Cape Breton police officer with assault

July 14, 2023  By The Canadian Press

July 14, 2023, Sydney, N.S. – Nova Scotia’s police watchdog agency has charged a Cape Breton Regional Police officer with one count of assault causing bodily harm.

The independent Serious Incident Response Team issued a statement today saying it was contacted on May 7 by the police force, which was investigating an alleged assault committed by an off-duty officer in the Sydney area.

No details were released about what happened.

The team then started its own investigation, which determined a charge was warranted.

Const. Curtis MacDonald appeared in Sydney provincial court on July 6, and he is scheduled to make another appearance on Aug. 24.

The team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
