Oct. 20, 2022, Grande Prairie, Alta. – Alberta’s police watchdog says an RCMP officer has been charged after hitting a 28-year-old cyclist who sustained serious injuries last year.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says Const. Damien Lessard-Jomphe was charged Wednesday with dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm.

The RCMP says in a statement that Lessard-Jomphe, who has been with the police service for five years, was responding to report of two people on bicycles towing a safe in Grande Prairie, Alta., in April 2021.

They say there was a collision between a police vehicle and one of the cyclists, who received several injuries.

ASIRT says Lessard-Jomphe was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on Nov. 30.

RCMP say the officer remains on active duty until the conclusion of court proceedings.
