RCMP corporal in Nova Scotia faces charges of assault, choking in February incident

September 2, 2022  By The Canadian Press

Sept. 1, 2022, Pictou, N.S. – A Nova Scotia RCMP corporal has been charged with assault and choking in relation to what a senior officer is referring to as an “alarming” incident last February.

The Serious Incident Response Team – the provincial agency that investigates police – says Cpl. Mark Kellock will appear in Pictou, N.S., provincial court on Sept. 26 to face the charges.

The agency was contacted by RCMP after the police force received a complaint of the alleged assault last Feb. 21.

Insp. Matco Sirotic, the district policing officer in the Northeast Nova district, referred to the incident as a case of “an on-duty excessive use of force allegation.”

He says the criminal charges are alarming and the force takes them seriously.

Sirotic said Kellock, who’s been an RCMP member for 29 years, is currently on administrative duties and that his employment status is under review pending an internal code of conduct investigation and the court process.
