The Canadian Critical Incident Inc. will be hosting a Crisis Negotiators and Recertification Course. The five-day course will be accredited by the Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services through the Ontario Police College and South Simcoe Police Service.
This five-day Crisis Negotiators and Recertification Course will provide a current and a comprehensive understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Crisis Negotiator.
Crisis negotiators are faced with the pressure to manage high-risk incidents as a critical part of the Command Triangle while communicating with persons in crisis and assisting the direction of major incidents. Negotiating with a hostage, barricaded, or suicidal person is among the most impactful and difficult tasks a police officer or frontline mental health worker will encounter.
This course will review the Incident Command Triangle, respective roles and responsibilities, and the need for a coordinated effort to resolve the incident with minimal tactical intervention. Concepts and philosophy of crisis negotiations, subject/suspect assessment, mental illnesses and how to manage the behaviour of people in crisis will be reviewed to develop the Negotiator’s ability to use negotiation techniques, enhance active listening, effective communications skills and apply crisis negotiation strategies.
CCII welcomes Dr. Mini Mamak, Forensic Psychologist to the course to discuss the value of having the expertise to consult with the command team to support the Incident Commander and Crisis Negotiation Team. Dr. Mamak will review common mental illnesses and the challenges of negotiating with those suffering from a mental illness and in a state of crisis.
To successfully complete this course the student will be required to pass a written test (75 per cent pass) and participate and pass a scenario-based training exercise and 100 % class attendance.
The cost of this Ministry accredited course is $900.00 for the five days and $700.00 for the three-day recertification.
