Feb. 22, 2024, Saint John, N.B. – Police in New Brunswick say they have charged a 35-year-old man with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing a police officer in the entrance of a Canadian Tire store in Saint John.

The city’s police force says officers arrived at the store late Wednesday evening after receiving reports about a man with a knife who was threatening staff and causing damage.

Staff Sgt. Sean Rocca says a police officer was in the entranceway of the store when the man allegedly stabbed him.

A news release says officers stopped the attack and arrested the suspect without injury to anyone else.

Rocca says the wounded officer is in stable condition in hospital.

The force says the man is facing six charges, including attempted murder, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace.
