TPS statement on decision regarding Detective Christopher Hutchings

Jan. 27, 2022, Toronto, Ont. – On Thursday, January 27, 2022, Justice Apple Newton-Smith acquitted Detective Christopher Hutchings of Assault.
The Toronto Police Service respects the Court’s ruling.
Notwithstanding the finding of not guilty, the Service nevertheless has concerns with respect to the level of professionalism demonstrated during this incident.
As such, Professional Standards is engaged to examine this specific issue.

With the possibility of an appeal and related, unresolved, criminal charges pending, the Service will not be offering further comment.
