Aug. 25, 2021, Toronto — The Toronto Police Service (TPS) is implementing a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination requirement for all members, both uniform and civilian.

In a press statement, the TPS said it has an obligation to ensure a safe workplace for TPS members and the public as a primary commitment throughout the pandemic.

The statement said the TPS continues to support and follow public health advice regarding vaccination, social distancing, the wearing of masks, and the use of PPE among other precautions, and will implement the new mandatory requirement for all members to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to the TPS’ duty to accommodate members pursuant to the Human Rights Code.

As a first step, all TPS members will be required to disclose and provide proof of their COVID-19 vaccination status by Sept. 13.

Police Chief James Ramer said: “The safety of our members, our workplaces and the public is of utmost importance to us. Our members will be required to be fully vaccinated to protect each other and the communities we serve.”

The Toronto Police Association released a statement opposing the mandatory vaccination announcing, saying ““The TPA must make every effort to protect all of our members and therefore, does not support this mandatory vaccination announcement or mandatory disclosure.”
