Sarnia police officer rescues male from frigid water
On March 30, 2019 at 11:10 p.m. Sarnia Police officers responded to a despondent male walking into the freezing water of the St. Clair River at Sarnia Bay in Centennial Park.
The initial officer on scene attempted to convince the male to return to shore; however, the male continued to walk deeper into the water until he was shoulder deep.
P.C. John Darnell attended and found the male party up to his shoulders in water and continuing to walk out into the river.
Darnell entered the water and rushed out to the male who was in a dangerous situation. He was able to grab onto the male and help him to shore.
Darnell put his life on the line by entering the cold water after making the determination that waiting for any other assistance would be catastrophic to the male party.
The male party was taken to Bluewater Health for treatment and after a warm shower and change of clothes, Darnell finished his night shift on the road.
