Ottawa launches RCMP Missing Person DNA Databank

Also known as “Lindsey’s Law,” this law expands Canada’s national DNA bank to include missing persons, such as from personal items like toothbrushes or clothing. It will also include DNA from relatives and unidentified human remains, according to media reports.

“Lindsey’s Law” comes from the story of Judy Peterson, who has been lobbying for these changes to the databank since 2000, after her 14 year-old daughter, Lindsey Nicholls, went missing on Vancouver Island in 1993.

“Regulators say the long delay in setting up the databank was to deal with privacy and technical issues around the collection and use of DNA,” writes one CBC article.
