Online romance scam suspect apprehended by Halton Police

Apr. 19, 2022, Milton, Ont. – Halton Police have arrested a man believed to be involved in defrauding a number of people through online romance.

Investigators had started the investigation in January 2019 after an Oakville resident complained they had been deprived of approximately $70,000.

Police said the suspect, Toju Ariri, 34, would initiate and maintain contact with his victims through email and text, establish trust through this remote relationship, and convince them to transfer funds.

He is a resident of Mississauga.

A lengthy investigation revealed that the suspect targeted several people across Canada with losses totalling approximately $370,000.

Ariri has been charged with six counts of Fraud over $5000.

He is scheduled to appear before a court soon.

The identity of victims although known to police, has not been revealed to protect privacy.

Police said the suspect used aliases of Dante Leonardo, Sean Bruno and Jason Roberto to trap his victims.
