They say the collision took place early Saturday morning in Mississauga, Ont., and involved only one vehicle.

The off-duty officer, who was driving the vehicle, and a passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

A second passenger was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Peel police did not release the name of the officer and say they’re asking Toronto police to take over the investigation into the crash.

It says flags will fly at half-mast in tribute to the deceased officer.

“It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we learn of the death of one of our fellow officers,” Peel police Chief Jennifer Evans said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and both other families impacted by this tragic event.”
