Montreal recommends Dagher be appointed at next chief of police

November 24, 2022  By The Canadian Press

Nov. 24, 2022, Montreal, Que. – The City of Montreal is recommending that Fady Dagher be appointed as the next chief of police.

Dagher is currently the chief of police in the Montreal suburb of Longueuil, Que., and is known for implementing a community-focused approach to policing in that city.

He is an immigrant from Cote d’Ivoire and a former deputy chief of the Montreal police service.

Dagher told Montreal’s public safety committee this morning that his mission is to build closer relationships between the police and the city’s diverse communities.

He says he recognizes that racial profiling by police is a problem, admitting that he has – often unconsciously – racially profiled people in the past.

Dagher’s appointment will need to be approved by several municipal bodies and by the provincial government. Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante is holding a news conference later today to announce Dagher as the city’s choice for police chief.
