Apr. 28, 2022, Manitoulin Island, Ont. – Former Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) Chief of Police Terry McCaffrey has been found guilty of sexual assault.

Justice J. Elliott Allen read out his verdict today during a virtual court session. The four-day trial ended on March 18.

Mr. McCaffrey has been suspended from his role as chief of WTPS since the charge was laid by the Ontario Provincial Police in January 2021.

Throughout the trial, Mr. McCaffrey denied the assault, calling it a fabrication. Justice Allen found Mr. McCaffrey gave noncommittal responses and did not believe Mr. McCaffrey’s version of events or his purported lack of memory.

The complainant, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban, was found to be unguarded and uncontrived in her testimony. Justice Allen found the quality of the woman’s evidence to be compelling and truthful.

A date for sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
