The Indigenous Police Chiefs of Ontario (IPCO) is an organization representing the nine standalone Indigenous police services in the province of Ontario. IPCO is proud to announce the very first upcoming Path to Wellness mental health conference on May 31, June 1 & 2, 2022.
This inaugural conference will bring together representatives from Ontario’s nine standalone Indigenous police services, alongside mental health professionals, community members and representatives of the Ontario and Canadian governments, to discuss the mental health crisis currently facing Indigenous police services. The growing reality is that mental health impacts not only the quality of employment relationships and the services that can be provided, but as the Ontario Provincial Police Report recently demonstrated, can result in the suicides of front-line workers related to PTSD. Indigenous police services are no different; in many cases they are in worse situations than other police services because they are not only dealing with the stresses of the work environment but the impact of years of generational trauma.
The goal of this conference is to develop Indigenous-centric strategies to improve officer mental health and thereby improve quality of service, reduce lost time due to mental health leave and reduce risks to community and officer safety.
At its core, this conference is a launch point for a new mental health strategy for Indigenous policing.
