Canada’s premiers, police chiefs to talk bail reform as Ottawa faces calls for change

The association representing Canada’s chiefs of police is expected to meet with provincial and territorial premiers today to talk about reforming Canada’s criminal justice system. Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson, who chairs the Council of the Federation, says premiers aim to hear chiefs’ public-safety concerns and their perspectives on how Ottawa should amend federal law, including on bail reform.

City Of Grande Prairie announces process for new chief of police

The City of Grande Prairie is now receiving applications for the city’s new chief of the Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS). The new chief of police will report directly to the Grande Prairie Police Commission and be responsible for the overall leadership and direction of the newly established GPPS. The chief of police plays a critical role in the leadership of public safety initiatives within our community.

Concerns raised over recommendation to phaseout RCMP police training Depot in Regina

A report into the 2020 shooting rampage in Nova Scotia that left 22 people dead recommended the phaseout by 2032, and that provinces instead establish three-year policing degree programs. The RCMP has been training recruits at the Depot for the past 140 years. It has strong ties to Regina and has been a source of heritage, employment and tourism in the province.

In fact, when she left high school, she followed the path of academia, first earning her bachelor’s degree in health promotion, then her master’s in human kinetics, where she learned a lot about the preventative aspects of health.
