October 5, 2020  By The Canadian Press

The first Black police chief in Canada has been appointed as Ontario’s first Inspector General of Policing.

Devon Clunis served as chief of the Winnipeg Police Service from 2012 until his retirement in 2016.

In his new role, Clunis will be responsible for setting up an arm’s length inspectorate that will provide policing oversight and ensure effective policing services to all communities.

Solicitor General Sylvia Jones says the inspectorate will improve transparency and accountability and help increase trust between the public and police.
