Calgary police officer charged with assault after woman injured during arrest

Nov. 22, 2022, Calgary, Alta. – A police officer in Calgary has been charged with assault causing bodily harm while he was on duty.

Calgary police say in a statement that the charge is related to a call on June 17, 2021, when officers responded to the northeast community of Temple.

They say officers arrested an adult woman at a home and took her into their custody.

Before she was placed in the vehicle, police say a struggle occurred and force was used by an officer.

They say the woman was injured and transported to hospital for assessment and treatment.

Const. Jameson Kooistra, who is 31 and has been an officer for three years, has been charged and assigned to administrative duties until his status can be reviewed.

“Police conduct in Alberta is governed by the Criminal Code of Canada, and Alberta’s Police Act and Police Service Regulation,” said the statement Tuesday.

“Officers are permitted to use reasonable and necessary force in the execution of their duties, but they can be charged if there are grounds to believe the force was excessive or not required at all.”

Police added that the woman died in September 2022, but they say it was not related to her physical injuries from the arrest.
